Located in Southern Maryland, European Vintage Model Trains mission is to bring European O Gauge Coarse Scale DC 3rd Rail Locomotives and Tinplate products to the US and Canadian market. Darstaed CEO, Andries Grabowsky, offered this exclusive representative position to Edward & Jeanne Cognazzo in June of 2015. EVMT believes that the outstanding workmanship and detail of the Darstaed and ETS products need to be available to toy train collectors worldwide.

Our main focus at European Vintage Model Trains is on the O Gauge Coarse Scale DC 3rd Rail Tinplate Darstaed Locomotives. The primary tinplate locomotive we sell is the new LNER Gresley A4 Pacific, with over 9 different liveries to choose from. Built in the 1930s, the A4 Pacific was designed by Nigel Gresley for long distance speed and performance services. The Mallard broke the world record for the fastest steam locomotive, assuring the A4 of its place in history.
Picked up the A-4 at the post office today. When I took it out of the box, I was blown away by the detail, fit, finish, sheet metal tender and most of all by the gear train. This has to be the pinnacle of so called "tin plate" locomotives. I have owned over 100 locomotives from various manufacturers, Lionel, MTH, Marklin, Ives and antiques from obscure companies that I either repaired or sold. This Darstaed A-4 is truly top shelf. I placed it on my desk side by side with my O gauge Sunset 3rd Rail brass, scale Flying Scotsman and it is truly on par with this custom built brass locomotive. Great work, Mr. Andries Grabowsky (CEO of Darstaed)! Nothing more to say.
I was surprised to see all cut gears running from the motor to the individual drive wheels. I read on the Darstaed Facebook page that two railers are concerned about this and want gears removed and the outer drivers to be powered solely by the side rods. In my opinion, as an owner of over 40 brass and die cast O gauge contemporary locomotives from 3rd Rail, Lionel and MTH, a locomotive that weighs over 7 pounds needs a substantial gear train to move itself and a dozen heavy passenger cars. I have several Lionel O gauge and standard gauge locomotives that are between 70 and 90 years old with substantial cut gears that are still running, trouble free, after all of these decades with periodic lubrication. It is also interesting to note that Marklin uses full spur gear drive to all drivers on their HO die cast steam locomotives. I know because I have nearly 100 of them in boxes that I have owned for nearly 40 years. Heavy O gauge trains are by their nature noisy. 3rd Rail is the exception because they use a toothed carbon fiber belt between the motor and the gear box, which is a worm and worm gear set up. All in, I like the Darstaed gear train and believe that once I install TMCC and a sound system, it won't generate any more gear noise than other engines on my layout. Thanks again and looking forward to future Darstaed offerings.
